How to Measure AI Visibility: Metrics & Process

You cannot improve what you do not measure. AI visibility is harder to track than rankings, but a simple, repeatable process gives you a reliable picture.

Step 1: Build a Prompt List

Write 20 to 30 questions your buyers actually ask, for example:

  • "What is the best marketing dashboard for agencies?"
  • "Supermetrics alternatives"
  • "How do I track ROAS across Google and Meta?"

Step 2: Test Across Assistants

Run every prompt in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews. Record for each:

  • Is your brand mentioned?
  • In what position?
  • Is your site cited as a source?
  • Is the description accurate?

Step 3: Calculate Your Metrics

MetricFormula
AI Share of VoicePrompts mentioning you / total prompts
Citation RateAnswers linking your site / total answers
Average PositionMean rank of your brand in answer lists
Accuracy ScoreCorrect descriptions / total mentions

Step 4: Track Referral Traffic

In Google Analytics, create a segment for referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Growth here is the clearest business signal.

Step 5: Repeat Monthly

AI answers change frequently. A monthly snapshot shows whether new content, schema and trust improvements are moving the numbers.

What Good Looks Like

Most brands start below 10% AI share of voice in their category. Reaching 30% or more on your core prompts usually means you are on every serious shortlist.
