Keyword Research Beyond Search Volume: The Real Metrics That Matter

Why Search Volume Is Not the Right Metric for Keyword Selection

Most keyword research tools default to sort-by-search-volume. Pick the keywords with the highest volume, and you'll get the most traffic. Right?

Wrong. Search volume is the wrong filter. It's like choosing which movies to watch based only on how many people are in the theater - you'll end up watching blockbusters, not good movies.

The keywords with the highest search volume are often the lowest-intent, lowest-conversion keywords. A keyword with 10,000 monthly searches might cost $0.50/click and convert at 0.5%. A keyword with 500 monthly searches might cost $8.00/click but convert at 8%. The latter is 20x more valuable per click.

The Metrics That Actually Matter

1. Search Intent (Most Important)

Search intent has four categories:

Commercial Intent (buying):

  • "Best CRM software for nonprofits"
  • "HubSpot pricing"

These are gold. Users are actively evaluating solutions.

Transactional Intent (ready to buy):

  • Brand + specific product ("Salesforce pricing")
  • Problem + solution ("how to manage contacts better")

These convert at 5–15% for e-commerce, 2–8% for B2B.

Informational Intent (learning):

  • "How to manage customer relationships"
  • "CRM implementation best practices"

These convert at 0.1–1% but are great for building authority and top-of-funnel.

Navigational Intent (going to a site):

  • "HubSpot login"
  • "Salesforce app download"

Not useful as acquisition channels unless targeting competitors' users.

Action: Segment your keyword list by intent. Only commercial and transactional keywords should get your premium budget.

2. Intent Alignment With Your Landing Page

A keyword can have high intent but no value if your landing page doesn't match.

Example: You have a keyword "best CRM for nonprofits" but your landing page is a generic CRM demo page. The user lands expecting nonprofit-specific messaging and sees a generic product overview. They bounce.

Alignment formula:

  • Keyword: "best CRM for nonprofits"
  • Landing page headline should reference "nonprofit CRM" in the first line
  • Page should address nonprofit-specific challenges: budget constraints, volunteer management, etc.

Misalignment tanks conversion rate even with high-intent keywords.

3. CPA Potential (Your True Filter)

Calculate your likely CPA for each keyword:

CPA = (CPC × Competition) ÷ CVR

Example:

  • "Best project management software" = $5 CPC × 2.5 competition ÷ 2% CVR = $625 CPA
  • "Project management for remote teams" = $2.50 CPC × 1.2 competition ÷ 4% CVR = $75 CPA

Same category, wildly different unit economics.

Action: Filter your keyword list by estimated CPA first, not search volume.

The Keyword Research Workflow That Works

Step 1: Start With Seed Keywords

Don't start with a tool. Start with the problems your customers have:

  • Customer service challenges
  • Nonprofit budget constraints
  • Team collaboration friction

These become your seed keywords.

Step 2: Expand Via Multiple Tools

Use 2–3 tools to identify variations:

Google Keyword Planner (free): Shows search volume and competition. Use for validation, not discovery.

Semrush / Ahrefs: Shows what competitors rank for. Study competitor keywords to find gaps.

Google Search Console: Shows what queries are already bringing you traffic. Underutilized gold mine.

Answer engines (people also ask, related searches): "People Also Ask" in Google Search Results shows real user question variations.

Step 3: Filter by Qualification Matrix

Build a simple qualification matrix and segment as:

  • Tier 1 (Launch immediately): High intent + reasonable CPA
  • Tier 2 (Test with small budget): Medium intent + decent CVR potential
  • Tier 3 (Content, not ads): Informational intent, create content instead

Step 4: Monitor Real Performance

After 4 weeks of traffic, update your Estimated CVR column with actual CVR data. This makes your filter smarter over time.

The bottom line: Stop filtering keywords by search volume. Filter by search intent, intent-to-action alignment, estimated unit economics, and your account-specific competitive advantages. This creates a smaller, higher-value keyword list that outperforms a massive, unfocused one.
