Google Analytics 4: What Performance Marketers Actually Need to Know

GA4 Is the Most Powerful Neutral Measurement Tool You Are Probably Ignoring

When Google forced the migration from Universal Analytics to GA4, most performance marketers set it up and mostly ignored it in favor of platform dashboards.

GA4 — properly configured — is not owned by any ad platform. It does not have a financial incentive to over-report conversions. It has cross-channel attribution data that platform dashboards cannot access.

The Core Concepts

Events Replace Goals

GA4 uses Events for everything. The key performance marketing events:

  • purchase — revenue conversion
  • generate_lead — form submission
  • begin_checkout — cart-stage conversion
  • add_to_cart — product interest

Mark key events as Conversions to make them available in reports and Google Ads imports.

Attribution Models in GA4

GA4 defaults to Data-Driven Attribution (DDA) — machine learning distributes credit across touchpoints. Use it for cross-channel analysis. Compare against Last Click to see which channels are undervalued.

Setting Up GA4 Correctly

Connect All Ad Platforms

  • Google Ads: Link via Google Ads — Linked Accounts — GA4
  • Meta: Requires UTM parameters on all campaigns (utm_source=facebook, utm_medium=paid_social)
  • TikTok: Same — UTM parameters required
  • Email: utm_source=email, utm_medium=email

Without UTMs on non-Google channels, GA4 shows traffic as Direct — the most misleading category in analytics.

Mark Conversions Correctly

Do NOT mark micro-events (page views, button hovers) as conversions. This corrupts Smart Bidding signals. Only revenue events and genuine leads should be conversions.

Exclude Internal Traffic

Add your office IP address to GA4's internal traffic filter. Your own team browsing the site inflates metrics.

The Reports That Actually Matter

Conversion Path Analysis

Advertising — Attribution — Conversion paths

This shows the full touchpoint sequence before every conversion. Most underused report for performance marketers. Shows which channels appear as first touch, last touch, or mid-funnel.

This is the neutral cross-channel data that platform dashboards will never show you.

Funnel Exploration

Build custom funnel reports to visualize drop-off:

Ad click — Landing page — Product page — Cart — Checkout — Purchase

If 60% of users drop between landing page and product page, that is a landing page problem. If 40% drop at checkout, that is payment friction.

GA4 as Attribution Sanity Check

The comparison process:

  1. Export platform-reported conversions by day from Google Ads, Meta, TikTok
  2. Export GA4 conversions by session source for the same period
  3. Compare totals

Typical inflation ratios vs. GA4:

  • Google Ads: 10–30% inflation
  • Meta: 40–80% inflation (post-iOS 14)
  • TikTok: 100–200% inflation (view-through window)

Use GA4 as the conservative floor. Platform numbers are the optimistic ceiling. The truth is somewhere between.

GA4 Limitations to Know

GA4 also misses conversions. Ad blockers, iOS Safari, cross-device journeys mean GA4 under-counts too. It is conservative but not complete.

Data latency: GA4 data can be delayed up to 48 hours for some reports. Do not compare yesterday's GA4 data to today's platform data.

The bottom line: GA4 is the most neutral attribution tool available — and it is free. Set it up properly, connect all channels with UTMs, and use it as a sanity check against platform-reported numbers. The gap between what platforms claim and what GA4 shows is often the most revealing number in your analytics stack.
